Project Controls and Scheduling: Keeping Your Project on Track

Project controls bring together planning and operational monitoring to provide a reliable view of how a project is progressing against its objectives. MESLI Consulting establishes and maintains schedule baselines, measures actual progress and analyses interfaces between work packages.

This method helps assess whether the schedule is achievable, identify activities that are constraining and adjust the sequencing of the project. We deliver a practical, workable schedule that helps coordinate contractors, anticipate upcoming constraints and focus resources on priority activities.

Our Project Scheduling Expertise

Our experts develop detailed project schedules that reflect the requirements of every phase of the project.

  • Project definition: Establishing the scope boundaries, constraints and input data needed to build a realistic schedule.

  • Schedule structure: Developing the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and agreeing the project structure with the client, then mapping activities across every phase, from engineering through to handover.

  • Interface and risk analysis: Identifying activity dependencies and potential bottlenecks to ensure the schedule is logically consistent and deliverable.

  • Basis of Schedule: Documenting the assumptions, input data and scheduling decisions that underpin the plan, ensuring transparency and traceability.

We compare actual site progress with contractual commitments to identify emerging slippage and keep the project aligned with its schedule.

  • Progress measurement: Establishing progress status through reviews with contractors to build a consolidated, evidence-based picture of actual project performance.

  • Schedule variance analysis: Comparing progress against the baseline schedule and contractual milestones, by work package or system, to identify delays and assess their impact on project dates.

Project scheduling identifies the activities that drive completion dates and helps focus project controls where they matter most.

  • Critical activity identification: Analysing the critical path and available float to identify activities whose delay could affect key project dates.

  • Schedule risk assessment: Evaluating how slippage could affect key milestones and the forecast completion date.

  • Decision support: Providing the project leadership team with clear, detailed reports to prioritise interventions and protect contractual milestones.

Our consultants run regular workshops with project stakeholders to identify opportunities to improve the schedule.

  • Identifying opportunities: Reviewing the schedule collaboratively to find potential time savings and improve activity sequencing.

  • Performance reporting: Preparing and presenting reports that track key performance indicators (KPIs) and support informed decisions on the actions required.

Clear outputs to help you manage your project

Reliable key indicators and focused analysis help measure performance, anticipate slippage and support timely decisions.

Baseline Schedule

The approved master schedule, including the WBS, activity logic, durations, contractual milestones and forecast completion date. It provides the benchmark for measuring performance and explaining variances.

Schedule Variance Analysis

An updated schedule incorporating actual dates, progress, remaining durations and revised forecast dates. Performance is measured against the baseline to identify delays by activity and milestone.

Critical Path Analysis

The report identifies the activities driving the completion date, near-critical activities and changes in float. It highlights delays that could push key project dates back.

Four-Week Look-Ahead Schedule

A short-term operational schedule covering the weeks ahead. It helps coordinate contractors, prepare upcoming work and identify constraints that could prevent activities from starting as planned.

Progress Report and KPIs

A summary of planned versus actual progress, forecast completion dates and issues requiring a decision. Key performance Indicators should be based on defined measurement rules.

Recovery schedule

A revised schedule developed when a project falls behind. It sets out changes to activity sequencing and proposed measures to recover time, together with an assessment of their impact on milestones and the completion date.

Delay Analysis

A focused assessment of how an event affects the schedule, milestones and completion date. It is particularly useful when substantiating delay, assessing an Extension of Time (EOT) request or supporting a contractual claim.

Earned Value Management (EVM)

EVM combines physical progress, schedule and cost data to assess actual project performance. It shows whether completed work is in line with plan, whether costs are under control and which trends could affect the final outcome.

Why Robust Project Planning Matters?

On industrial projects, delivery dates depend on approvals, procurement and coordination between contractors. A single weak link can put the entire project schedule at risk.

MESLI Consulting develops schedules that connect contractual commitments with actual execution conditions. Assumptions are made explicit, dependencies are structured and interfaces between work packages are integrated. The schedule becomes a shared reference for the project leadership team and contractors, rather than a theoretical document disconnected from site realities.

Our consultants help test whether target dates are achievable before they become unrealistic. Working with your team, we compare delivery scenarios and provide evidence-based options for decision-making. Your Project Management Office (PMO) gains a robust, defensible project forecast to support its commitments and trigger the right actions at the right time.

Customized support tailored to your ground-level challenges

Our consultants are proficient in the leading project management software solutions on the market. We select and use the most appropriate tools for the specific challenges of each project.

Construction and infrastructure

Integrating contractors’ schedules, monitoring interfaces between trades and identifying critical sequences provides an overall view of site activities. This helps prevent knock-on delays and maintain control of key dates.

Nuclear and Energy

Procurement constraints, installation sequences and commissioning activities are brought together in a coherent schedule. Critical activities and available float are identified to support decisions and anticipate potential slippage.

Multi-Package Industrial Projects

Engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning schedules are integrated, while interfaces are analysed and sequencing conflicts identified. This integrated approach exposes clashes between work packages and helps coordinate action before key milestones are affected.
